Our Story

Sean and Rene

Believers Chapel was founded with one simple mission: to see lives transformed by the power of Jesus Christ.

In 2009, Pastor Sean Obergfell felt God calling him to leave his full-time career as a police officer and plant a church in his hometown. With the unwavering support of his wife, Rene, they stepped out in faith to build a church centered on passionate worship, biblical teaching, and helping people know Christ. Together with Brendon and Theresa Miller, the very first Believers Chapel service was held in the Obergfells’ living room in Olean, New York, on May 24, 2009.

As more people came, the church quickly outgrew the living room and spent the summer gathering outdoors in Lincoln Park. When colder weather arrived, an empty warehouse in Allegany became available. Through the hard work of many dedicated volunteers, that warehouse was transformed into a welcoming place of worship where the church continued to grow.

Over the years, Believers Chapel has seen God faithfully build not only a congregation but a community of strong families, meaningful relationships, and lives changed by His grace.

In 2016, while searching for a larger space to hold a Christmas service, the church rented a local banquet center. What began as a temporary solution soon became the opportunity that led Believers Chapel to its current home on Constitution Avenue in Olean. Although the locations have changed over the years, the mission has remained the same: To see people saved, set free, walking in the fear of the Lord, living lives of worship and truth, and honoring Jesus Christ as King.

We’re grateful for what God has done and excited for what He continues to do through every person who walks through our doors. Whether you’re exploring faith for the first time or looking for a church to call home, we’d love to welcome you. We hope you’ll join us this Sunday and experience the love of Christ alongside our church family.
